Introducing Kids to the Game of Golf.

Coloring Books and Putting Greens

Several years ago, a close friend of mine gave me a single pearl of wisdom… “Any day on the golf course with your children is a great day.” He said “don’t worry about hitting balls or the playing of golf, just enjoy the day and see what happens.”

The past weekend, I took his suggestion to heart and I am pleased to report that we recorded another great time at the golf course… enjoyed by all.

The Set-Up.  The day was Sunday evening, the weather was perfect and the kids were busy inking up their coloring book.  It was a perfect opportunity to go to the putting green and enjoy the last few hours of the day.  My only challenge is my girls said they didn’t want to go with me to the golf course but they wanted to continue coloring.

My Options (3).  Option 1 – Go by myself, Option 2 – Coarse my kids to go with me or Option 3 – Get creative.  Creativity won, the winning formula was the idea of them taking their coloring books to the putting green.  Shortly thereafter, we were in the car with a couple coloring books, a bag full of crayons and our chipper and putter.

The Scenario.  Within the first 10 minutes the girls were barefoot and sprawled out with their colors on the edge of the putting green diligently inking up their paper.  At the 15 min mark, I could tell that my oldest (Ally – 8 yrs) was getting bored and ready for a new activity.  Shortly thereafter, Ally said that she wanted to play a chipping game.

The Twist.   For the next 45 minutes Ally and I played closest to the hole chipping games and had a great time.  My old friend’s formula turned out to be true to a “tee.” Going to the golf course doesn’t need to be about golf… just spending time and creating those special moments.  For Ally and I, this journey to the golf course was another one of those great times… fun to be had by all.

Now go create some of those memories… and even bring a few coloring books!

Cheers.
