Introducing Kids to the Game of Golf.

Walking vs. Riding

When I grew up… it was foreign for a kid to be caught riding in a golf cart.  Somewhere over the last 20 years, kids got lazier and lost the love for walking 9, 18, or 36 holes of golf without skipping a beat.  Nowadays, you will find more and more kids with their bags strapped on an electronic cart vs. walking.  As parents, it is very important for us to continue to stress the physical fitness attributes that the game provides.

In my world, my oldest Ally (8 years old) just started playing 9 holes.  A lesson learned that I want to share is power of the pull cart.  Over the past 30 days, Ally and I have played 4 rounds (9 holes)… every one of them she wanted to walk more than ride because of the fun she has with her pull cart.  The fun that Ally has found is related to “letting her cart go” down the big hills on #1, #3 and #9.  Both for a kid and an adult, seeing your cart travel at mock speeds down a big hill is a little rush… especially when daddy’s crashes into the sand trap and everything goes flying.

As parents, we need to continue to try to see golf through “a kid’s eye” vs. ours.  So if you want to have some fun, help your child get some great exercise and enjoy a nice long walk with your son/daughter… then go buy a pull cart and take them golfing.  I can promise you that not only will your child have more fun (than riding) but also your experience will be more rewarding.

Cheers!
